What is Oracle?

When learning the basics of databases, "what is Oracle?" is a common question many students ask. Is it software, the name of a technology company or both? Well, the answer is both.

Although the company’s official name is ‘Oracle Corporation’, it is often referred to as Oracle. But if someone asks you during an interview – ‘What is Oracle?’, make sure that you answer it with the definition provided below rather than mentioning that it is just the name for a huge technology company which was founded by Larry Ellison!

1.0 What is Oracle?

To put it in simple words, Oracle is a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). Simplifying it further, it is a database system in which data as well as relationship amongst data is stored as tables. As such it is one of the many different types of databases available, albeit one of the best known.

1.1 Tip

Oracle is a proprietary RDBMS and has a commercial license unlike other open source RDBMS like MySQL which are licensed under GPL.

2.0 What is Oracle Storage Mechanism?

Oracle Storage Mechanism can be divided into 2 different levels – Logical Storage as tablespaces and secondly Physical Storage as data files. Tablespaces comprise of memory segments which in turn comprise one or more extents. Extents further have groups of contiguous data blocks which serve as the basic units of data storage.

2.1 Tip

To display Oracle Tablespaces, enter the following command on the SQL prompt – select * from v$tablespace; and it will display all tablespaces on the Oracle server including the SYSTEM tablespace.

3.0 What is Oracle SYSTEM Tablespace?

The SYSTEM is a special Tablespace which stores the data dictionary, indexes and clusters for the database.

4.0 What is Oracle Data Dictionary?

The Oracle Data Dictionary is collection of tables which store information about all user objects of the database.

5.0 What is Oracle Database Schema?

A group of related objects with a well defined ownership is known as an Oracle database schema. The default Oracle Database Schema is named SCOTT and the credentials to access this schema are username – scott and password – tiger.

5.1 Tip

Connect to Oracle Server using username as scott and password as tiger in order to explore the Oracle default schema. However, make sure that you do not delete or modify any tables in the default schema else it may corrupt your database.

6.0 What is the Latest Version of Oracle?

The latest stable version of Oracle is 11g Release 2 which was released on 1st September, 2009.

6.1 Tip

Oracle follows the following versioning convention “Major Version. Maintenance Level. Application Server. Component. Platform” e.g. 11.2.0.1 – 11th Major Version, Maintenance Level – 2, Oracle Application Server Level – 0 and Level 1

7.0 What is Oracle 8i? What does ‘i’ stand for?

Oracle 8i was a major paradigm shift towards Object Oriented Development and Multimedia. The ‘i’ stands for Internet and it highlighted that Oracle 8i has better ability to interact with the internet as compared to its previous version

7.1 Tip

Oracle 8i was the first version to have an integrated JVM which allowed better connectivity to internet as compared to the predecessor non-I versions.

8.0 What is Oracle 10g? What does ‘g’ stand for?

Oracle 10 was sold by Oracle Corporation from year 2006 to 2008 and is regarded as one of the most widely sold versions of Oracle RDBMS. ‘g’ stands for Grid and highlights the Oracle 10 is ‘grid computing ready’

9.0 What is Oracle Application Server?

The Oracle Application Server is also known as OAS/ Oracle Application Server 10g. It is a middleware software platform which comprises of a HTTP Server and a container for deploying J2EE based enterprise and web applications

9.1 Tip

Unless you are specifically going to use OAS as the middleware, it is recommended NOT to jump on to learning OAS. It requires a decent level of understanding of J2EE and enterprise applications which can be difficult for database developers/ administrators.

What is Oracle? - Tip

Oracle is a hugely popular database and is commonly used in large scale developments. As such, in order to effectively manage the process of software development a project manager must be conversant with this technology, especially when trying to keep control of the software development costs, which is a key part of a project manager's duties.
