Benefits of Project ManagementIt never ceases to amaze me how many companies and individuals endeavour to run big budget projects with no dedicated project managers. Somehow the benefits of Project Management seem to completely pass them by until they discover the project has failed to meet the deadline set.
In fact the benefits of Project Management are numerous which can be demonstrated through the following example. Consider the average Technology project which might have a budget of say $250,000. This project requires a scope, deliverables, project plan and budget to all be devised and documented. Resources need to be allocated and workpackages written. Purchase Orders may need to be raised to pay for hardware or the services of external companies. Such a project may require deliverables from as many as twelve different streams. Worse still, certain streams will probably be unable to deliver their work until other streams have completed their tasks. So for example Development cannot start their work until the Business Analysis team have completed defining requirements. So who ensures the communication channels are maintained between different teams? Who decides what work takes priority? Who ensures plans are updated, and control on the budget is maintained? Who reports progress to the rest of the Business? Who resolves the numerous minutiae of problems which often crop up daily on projects? In fact who ensures the project is actually delivered to the scope and quality specified by the required date? It is of course the Project Manager who does, and this demonstrates the numerous benefits of Project Management. Without a Project Manager a project is rudderless. No one is in charge which means no one takes responsibility when things go wrong. The benefit of Project Management is that it creates a structure and process which enables a project to be swiftly initiated and delivered. It allows budgets and scope to be kept under control, resources to be motivated and ensures that a quality product is delivered. This is done via a variety of methods which you will find detailed elsewhere on this site In fact the Benefits of Project Management can be applied to almost every conceivable area, from clinical research to social housing, from business transformation to construction and from oil exploration to product development. There really is no field where Project Management is not required and where the benefits are not felt. So keep reading through this site and learn more about why Project Management is so vital to Corporates and how you can utilise it.
